Voices From Eureka’s Silent City

Eureka Springs Arkansas is known for it’s ghosts and spirits of the past. The historic, Victorian ambiance of the town seems to attract ghosts and ghost hunters of all types. There are numerous places to witness paranormal events including ghost tours, underground tours and a stage show that reportedly can speak with the spirits.

The Eureka Springs Historical Museum hosts its 3rd annual “Voices from Eureka’s Silent City” cemetery tour this year on October 14 and 15, and 28 and 29. Here’s your chance to hear from historical characters of Eureka Springs past, featuring live actors in period costumes playing early citizens of Eureka Springs reminiscing about their past. Some of the characters were pillars of the community and some were figures whose colorful, outrageous or scandalous behavior helped shape the history and the myths of the town.

Banjo Rally International – Eureka Springs, AR

Eureka Springs Banjo RallyCome enjoy Banjo Rally International in beautiful Eureka Springs Arkansas, August 31st through September 3rd, 2011. This rally has been held annually in Eureka Springs since 1975. Attendees come from all over the US and several other countries. Billed as a “world class celebration of Razzle-Dazzle Jazz Banjos,” the Eureka Springs Banjo Rally will include Ragtime, Dixieland, Tin Pan Alley, Broadway tunes and old standards musical styles.

There will be performance opportunities for players at local venues, institutions and other facilities; evening shows at the Best Western Convention Center and “jam sessions” at all hours of the day and night. A vendor room offering opportunity to see and acquire quality instruments, instrument accessories, sheet music, instruction materials and access instrument maintenance services and advice from experienced luthiers and players. Public evening shows are held on Friday and Saturday nights with quality performers and very reasonable admission prices. The public shows begin at 7:00 pm and last until they are over. After the evening shows, “jam sessions” usually breakout in every nook and cranny of the convention center and evening show attendees are welcome to linger and enjoy these sessions too.

One of the most interesting ways to learn about some of the history of Eureka Springs is to attend the Voices of the Silent City tour, hosted by the Eureka Springs Historical Museum this Friday, May 13th in the Eureka Springs Cemetery.

Not intended to be spooky, volunteers in period clothing portray some of the early citizens of Eureka Springs. Some of the characters were pillars of the community and others were figures whose colorful, outrageous or scandalous behavior helped shape the history and the myths of the town. This is an approximately one hour walking tour that includes 5 minute stops with each “citizen.” Tours are scheduled to start around 5:30 p.m. and will leave every twenty minutes, the last one ending at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the event. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at Eastgate Shopping Center located on Highway 62 East across from Passion Play Road.

This is a wonderful fundraising project of the Historical Museum and proceeds are used to finance daily operations, special exhibits and on-going restoration projects. The all new 2011 fall tour is scheduled for two weekends in October, the 14th & 15th and 28th & 29th.

The Great Passion Play Opens May 6 In Eureka Springs, AR

For the 43rd consecutive season, the Great Passion Play opens on May 6th in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It’s the annual tradition of the nation’s largest attended outdoor drama, portraying the last days of Jesus and his resurrection and ascension. Eureka Springs Great Passion Play It’s an outdoor spectacular brought to you by a cast of hundreds. Situated on a natural hillside in the Ozark Mountains, the drama will unfold before your eyes in realistic detail.

The Play is the centerpiece, but there’s much more at the Great Passion Play. Come early in the day and take the Living Bible Tour that recreates scenes directly from the Bible, tour the Sacred Arts Center that houses hundreds of painting and sculputures, see the largest piece of the Berlin Wall in the U.S. displaying a quote of 23rd Psalm in German, tour the Bible Museum displaying a collection of thousands of rare Bibles, some hundreds of years old, see the Church in the Grove, the Parables of the Potter and David the Shepherd Boy.

Eureka Springs Music Shows Reopen

The 2011 Music Show season reopens with the Pine Mountain Jamboree on March 4th.  Enjoy these great music and comedy shows that provide family fun and entertainment. The show is well known for the long-standing tradition of the best musicians in the area.

Pine Mountain Jamboree

The Pine Mountain Jamboree plays six nights a week, dark on Sundays.  The  southern gospel sounds of GOOD NEWS,  is nightly at 7:30 p.m and the main show begins at 8:00 pm. There’s also all you can eat Pine Mountain Popcorn…Free!!!
